A Study of Revelation Chapter 3:1-22

************************************************************************

Revelation 3:1: And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.

2: Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.

3: Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.

4: Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.

5: He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

6: He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

************************************************************************

Some points of interest from these verses:

If we are not careful, we might think that our works alone make us alive unto God. However, it is possible to have a name for our works, yet be dead. James wrote that faith without works is a dead faith. Conversely, works without faith is also dead. We must take care lest we become self-righteous, and think ourselves lively, when we can be found lacking.

Christ would come as a thief upon those who were not watchful.

Mark 13:34: “For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.

35: Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:

36: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.

37: And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.”

1 Thessalonians 5:1: “But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

2: For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

3: For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

4: But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

5: Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

6: Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

7: For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.”

2 Peter 3:10: “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

11: Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

12: Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

13: Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

14: Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.”

Revelation 16:15: “Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.”

The idea is to be watchful, since we are the bearers of light. We are not those who hide under cover of darkness, that we might do wicked things, but those who walk in the light of Christ—the Word, and the Truth.

************************************************************************

Revelation 3:4: Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.

************************************************************************

Sardis had her righteous, even among the unrighteous.

************************************************************************

Revelation 3:5: He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

6: He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

************************************************************************

What does it mean to “overcome”?

1 John 2:13: “I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.

14: “I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.”

1 John 4:3: “And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

4: Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

5: They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.

6: We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.”

We overcome the world and its sin when the word of God comes alive in our lives.

Revelation 3:7: And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;

8: I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.

9: Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.

************************************************************************

Isaiah 22:17: “Behold, the LORD will carry thee away with a mighty captivity, and will surely cover thee.

18: He will surely violently turn and toss thee like a ball into a large country: there shalt thou die, and there the chariots of thy glory shall be the shame of thy lord's house.

19: And I will drive thee from thy station, and from thy state shall he pull thee down.

20: And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah:

21: And I will clothe him with thy robe, and strengthen him with thy girdle, and I will commit thy government into his hand: and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah.

22: And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.

23: And I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place; and he shall be for a glorious throne to his father's house.”

Although the above passage is referring to an event in the time in which Isaiah lived, Jesus is using the language to describe Himself. He does so to explain that He has opened a door for the Christians at Philadelphia, which no man can close.

************************************************************************

Revelation 3:10: Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

11: Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

************************************************************************

We once again see in verse 11 that Jesus was coming quickly. Recall that John wrote that these things must shortly come to pass. We also see in verse 10 the remark that an “hour of temptation” was approaching. This reminds us of the language in the letter to the Hebrews, the oft-quoted verse 10:

Hebrews 10:25: “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”

Now, recall that destruction was coming upon the Jew first, then upon the Gentile:

Romans 2:9: “Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;”

The fall of Jerusalem and Judæa in AD 70 signaled the tribulation upon the Jew. There was tribulation coming to the Gentiles, as well. Tribulation simply means a time of trouble. This troublous time would also be a time of trial, to test those who were troubled.

1 Corinthians 3:11 “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

12: Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;

13: Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.

14: If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.

15: If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.”

1 Peter 1:5: “Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

6: Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:

7: That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:”

1 Peter 4:12: “Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:

13: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.”

Isaiah 48:10: “Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.

11: For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it: for how should my name be polluted?  and I will not give my glory unto another.”

Zechariah 13:6: “And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands?  Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.

7: Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.

8: And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.

9: And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.”

Malachi 3:1: “Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.

2: But who may abide the day of his coming?  and who shall stand when he appeareth?  for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:

3: And he shall sit as a refiner and purifer of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.

4: Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the LORD, as in the days of old, and as in former years.

5: And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts.

6: For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

7: Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them.  Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts.  But ye said, Wherein shall we return?”

Tribulations (troubles) test the stuff from which our faith is made. Our hearts and lives are purified when we endure severe trials and tests. We begin to understand what is important, and that which is extraneous. We abandon the dross, and become pure.

Revelation 3:12: Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.

13: He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

************************************************************************

The new Jerusalem is a spiritual city, not a physical one. It descends to the earth from God out of heaven. I understand this to be the ekklesia, the called-out assembly of God.

Galatians 4:22: “For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.

23: But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.

24: Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.

25: For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.

26: But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.”

Hebrews 12:18: “For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,

19: And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:

20: (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:

21: And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)

22: But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,

23: To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

24: And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.”

Revelation 21:1: “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

2: And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

3: And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.”

Note that the new Jersualem came down from God out of heaven, to the earth.

Many believe that the new name that was given was “Christian”—from the Greek, Christos, or Christ, meaning the Messiah, or Savior—denoting followers of Jesus. This differentiates it from the nation of Israel, which was the offspring of Jacob (Israel). The new Jerusalem is capital of the newly merged body of believers, both Jew and Gentile.

************************************************************************

Revelation 3:14: And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

15: I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

16: So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

17: Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

18: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

19: As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

20: Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

21: To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

22: He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

************************************************************************

Revelation 3:15 & 16 carries a sober warning which Christians today would do well to observe. The church at Laodicea was lukewarm in its religion. It is possible for one to be religious without being righteous. The Lord prefers one temperature or the other—hot, or cold. To be lukewarm is to be a fence sitter, without dedication. The Lord Himself had described this condition in:

Matthew 12:30: “He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.”

There is no true middle ground, nor gray area. There is only a stance for, or against, the Lord, and His righteousness.

Hebrews 11:6: “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”

Matthew 5:6: “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.”

Most of us prefer a hot or cold drink, and if it is lukewarm, we might well spew it out in disgust and distaste. That is how the Lord felt about the lukewarm Christians of Laodicea. They were apparently wealthy, leading them to feel that their needs were being met. This often happens to those who are well off. Remember the warning to the children of Israel entering the promised land?

Deuteronomy 8:11: “Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:

12: Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein;

13: And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied;

14: Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;

15: Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;

16: Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;

17: And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.

18: But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.”

The prosperous man of Luke 12, upon having a great harvest, determined to pull down his barns and build larger ones, to hold all the increase. He was then going to take it easy, but he died that night.

And, consider what the Apostle Paul wrote in:

1 Corinthians 1:26: “For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:

27: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

28: And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:

29: That no flesh should glory in his presence.”

Those with power, wealth, and famous bloodlines tend not to rely upon the Lord, but to trust themselves. But wealth can be fleeting.

James 5:1: “Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.

2: Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.

3: Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.”

The Laodiceans were in need of spiritual wealth, not material wealth. They were in need of spiritual healing, although they were in good health. They needed “gold purified by fire”.

Isaiah 13:9: “Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.

10: For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.

11: And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.

12: I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.

13: Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.”

The Lord’s day—that is, the day of the Lord—would refine and purify the righteous. The troublous times that were to come would open their eyes, and show them what was truly important. The Lord rebukes and chastens those whom He loves, so that they might see the error of their ways, and repent.

Hebrews 12:1: “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

2: Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

3: For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

4: Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.

5: And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

6: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.”

The advice that was good for the Laodiceans is also good for us. When we receive chastening, or a trial by fire, let us look upon it as a purification, and an opportunity to put evil from our lives. With the coming of trouble is the chance to repent, and completely turn our hearts to God.

Revelation 3:20 reveals that the Lord wanted the Laodiceans to dine with Him in His kingdom. The Lord knocks to see if Christians readily admit Him.

James 4:8: “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.”

Finally, we see in verse 21 that same promise of the sharing of rule that we discussed previously. God shared His throne with Jesus, and Jesus promised that He would share His throne with the Laodiceans who would overcome.
